How To Allow Windows 11/10 Feature Updates With Reboot Restore and RollBack Rx installed
applies to Reboot Restore Enterprise/Standard/Pro & RollBack Rx Pro/Server Edition
What are Windows 11/10 Feature Updates?
Windows Feature Updates are major, new versions of the Windows operating system that introduce significant changes. Unlike "quality updates" which are released weekly or monthly to provide security patches and bug fixes, Feature Updates include:
- New features: This can be anything from a redesigned user interface to new built-in applications and functionalities
- Performance improvements: Enhancements to the speed and efficiency of the operating system.
- Enhanced security: New security measures and technologies to better protect your device.
Think of a Feature Update as a full-fledged upgrade to your operating system (e.g., from Windows 11 version 23H2 to 24H2), whereas quality updates are more like routine
maintenance..
Feature Updates are typically released once a year.
How To Allow Windows 11/10 Feature Updates With Reboot Restore and RollBack Rx installed
Reboot Restore Rx/RollBack Rx protects the boot record by default. The boot record is also where the subsystem (pre-boot OS) resides. A typical Windows Feature Update requires access to the boot record to complete the installation process. With this process being blocked, Feature Updates will fail to complete installation.
Apply the settings below to prepare your system for a Feature Update, whether you plan to install it manually or let it happen automatically.
(1) Reboot Restore. Use any of the options below
a) From the client application. Go to Settings > Windows Updates > set to "Allow Install of Major Updates.."
b) From the command prompt.
ShdCmd.exe /BcdEdit [/enable | /disable] /u administrator /p password
c) From the EndPoint Manager > Right-click a client or group > under Modify Client Settings
(2) RollBack Rx. Use any of the options below
a) after a Typical Install, The prompt will show up below
b) under Settings > Windows Update
c) From the command prompt with the syntax below
ShdCmd.exe /BcdEdit [/enable | /disable] /u administrator /p password
d) From the EndPoint Manager. Right-click a client or group > under Modify Client Settings
TIP: You can preconfigure your client-side deployments (through Setup.ini Wizard) to have this enabled by default
or you can edit your existing custom setup.ini file and look for the line and set the value to 1. Example below
EnableBCDEdit=1
What Happens Next?
The Reboot Restore / RollBack Rx client software will auto-detect this install attempt action by Windows and turn off protection automatically (disable the subconsole). With protection mode off, Windows will then be able to install these type of updates with no issues.
Once a Feature Update has completed installation, the client software will see that the task has completed and re-enabled protection mode automatically (re-enable the subconsole). You may see several automatic reboots when this process happens
WARNING. As this is using the protection mode function, this will remove all previously saved snapshots and set a new "installation" baseline.
For RollBack Rx, this will remove all snapshot history and set a new "Installation" Snapshot/Baseline
For Reboot Restore, this deletes the Last Good Known (LGK baseline) and sets a new "Back to Start" Baseline
