# How to install new software / perform patch management?

## Follow these steps to commit Windows Updates and third-party software updates to your protected baseline.

Reboot Restore's baseline management allows IT Admins to make apply changes without ever turning off the software's protection. Below are a few typical scenarios on how to set Reboot Restore's settings.

Turning off Protection is not required when performing patch management changes.

The following can be performed locally in the client, via our EndPoint Manager Console or command line controls.

### From the client

Access the Reboot Restore settings panel by double-clicking on the tray icon in the Windows Notifications area. Enter your password.

1. From the Restore Settings tab \> set the system baseline setting to **Restore On Demand \> click Apply.**
2. Make your require changes; Windows Updates and/or third-party software updates. *Even if restarts are required for the updates being applied, the Restore On-Demand state will not remove new changes.*
3. Once all changes are successfully applied, set the Baseline Setting back to your previous state, typically **Automatically Restore: Every time the computer boots up.**
4. Click on Update Baseline tab \> **New Baseline.**

### From the EndPoint Manager Console (for Reboot Restore Enterprise users)

The EndPoint Manager Console can be used to perform the above steps by selecting a single PC or a group of PCs.

1. Click on the Clients Menu \> Protection Management \> Restore Settings
2. Select Restore On Demand \> click OK.
3. Make your require changes; Windows Updates and/or third-party software updates. *Even if restarts are required for the updates being applied, the Restore On-Demand state will not remove new changes.*
4. Click on the Clients Menu \> Protection Management \> Restore Settings and set the Restore Setting back to the previous option selected.
5. Click on the Clients Menu \> Protection Management \> New Baseline

### From a third party management solution (command line control)

Refer to your third party solution on how to integrate the following command line commands. The order should follow as follows:

- **Set the Restore Setting to Restore On Demand:**
  `"C:\Program Files\Reboot Restore Enterprise\ShdCmd.exe" /ResMode /disable /u administrator /p "YourPassword"`
- Perform Windows Updates and/or third-party software updates or changes
- **Set the Restore Setting back to your previous one (typically Restore on Reboot)**
  `"C:\Program Files\Reboot Restore Enterprise\ShdCmd.exe" /ResMode /restart /u administrator /p "YourPassword"`
- **Update Baseline:**

  `ShdCmd.exe /Snapshot /u administrator /p password`

Once the above steps are performed, your new changes will be part of your protected baseline that your PCs restore to on every restart.
