How to use the Update Baseline settings to automatically install Windows Updates

applies to Reboot Restore Enterprise, Standard and Pro

To ensure your protected computers are always up-to-date, Reboot Restore can be set to automatically check for and install critical and optional Windows updates, as well as updates for third-party software. Once the updates are finished, the software will automatically create a new baseline based on based on the set schedule

Update Baseline Configuration

The Update Baseline screen above is from our client software. This configuration can also be managed and updated via our EndPoint Manager for users of our Enterprise edition of Reboot Restore.

  1. Selecting the Windows Update checkbox will perform a search, download and install of Critical Updates only.

    1. Select Include optional updates to include both security and cumulative updates

  2. Optionally: Check the Custom update box to enable the command line update option that allows the installation of other updates for third-party applications (i.e. antivirus, web browsers, etc.). Refer to our guide on how to use the Custom Updates Settings: How do I use the Custom Update settings?

  3. Choose the scheduled settings when updates will be applied. Selection includes, daily, single day weekly, with a time frame. You can also select Manually which will only apply updates when manually triggered from the client or via EndPoint Manager console for our Enterprise edition users. One the updates are completed, a new baseline will be automatically set with all changes now part of the protected baseline.

    1. Schedule example in above screenshot: Every Wednesday from 1am to 5am, the PC will restart to begin Windows Updates.
    2. Times are based on a 24 hour clock
    3. Select timeframes within same day as they cannot cross Midnight (ie: 10pm to 2am)

Optional Options

  • Lock the computer screen while installing the update: This ensures that the update process is not disrupted and that users are aware that it's updating.

  • Shut down the PC after the updates have installed and new baseline is set.

    lock screen during update

If the above screen is displayed after booting up a PC, this typically means that PC missed the scheduled window for the Update Baseline event. You'll need to wait for the PC to complete the updates process.

Review your client configuration: Double click on the Reboot Restore icon in the Notification Area > enter your User password > click on the Settings icon (top right) > Program Settings > Autorun missed scheduled restore at next startup.

For our Enterprise edition users, refer below to change this setting from the EndPoint Manager.

Best Practices

Our recommended configuration for this setting is a weekly 4-5 hour window. Schedule this when the PCs are not in use, and select to lock the screen and shut down the machine when updates are complete.

If you're finding that not all updates are installing, you can increase the time period by an hour or two to give the program enough time to install the updates.

TIP: You can use the Setup INI Wizard to pre-configure your own Update Baseline settings to new installs.

Configuring through the Endpoint Manager

To configure this on clients that are connected to the Endpoint Manager

  1. Select a PC or a group of PCs

  2. Click on the Clients menu or right-click

  3. Click Advanced > Modify Client Settings > Manage Baseline

manage baseline

These options do not reflect the existing settings on the selected client or group of clients. The selected settings in the EndPoint Manager will always overwrite the settings for the selected client or group of clients.
