How to use the Update Baseline settings to automatically install Windows Updates
applies to Reboot Restore Enterprise, Standard and Pro
To ensure your protected computers are always up-to-date, Reboot Restore can be set to automatically check for and install critical and optional Windows updates, as well as updates for third-party software. Once the updates are finished, the software will automatically create a new baseline based on based on the set schedule
Client Side Setup
Here is an example screenshot to explain how to set this up.
(1) Check the boxes for Windows Updates (critical) and include optional Windows Update (security and cumulative updates)
(2) You can also select how to install other updates for third-party programs and services (i.e. Antivirus, Browser updates, etc.). We have a guide on how to set this up HERE
(3) Next, you choose whether you wish to install the updates on a day, every day, or manually. If you choose every day or a particular day, you then have to choose a time frame. Do note the time is in 24 hour clock format. You can also choose "when the updates finish". This would set a new baseline once the update process executable in Task Manager has closed
(4) (Optional) you can select to lock the screen. This ensures that the update process is not disrupted and that users are aware that it's updating.
(5) (Optional) Shut down the PC after the updates have installed and new baseline is set.
Using the screenshot above as an example, here is a more detailed explanation of how the automation works:
- on every Wednesday at 1am (if the PCs are ON) the PCs will reboot automatically and load the latest saved baseline. This is to ensure that system state being updated is clean of other user date
- after rebooting and loading the latest baseline, it will automatically set the Restore Settings to "Restore on Demand"
- Reboot Restore will then enable and run the Windows Updates services to check, download and install available updates. It will also run the executable set under the "Custom Updates" field
- (optionally) it will lock the screen (see screenshot below)
- on Wednesday at 5am, it will automatically create a New Baseline, and set back the Restore Settings to their original settings (i.e. automatically restore on reboot, etc.)
- (optionally) it will automatically shut down the PC
TIP: If you want to manually run the set updates in Update Baseline without waiting for the schedule, you can click on "Install Updates Now"
Best Practices
Our recommended configuration for this setting is a weekly 4-5 hour window.
Schedule this when the PCs are not in use, and select to lock the screen and shut down the machine when updates are complete.
If you're finding that not all updates are installing, you can increase the time period by an hour or two to give the program enough time to install the updates.
TIP: You can use the Setup INI Wizard to pre-configure your own Update Baseline settings to new installs
Configuring through the Endpoint Manager
To configure this on clients that are connected to the Endpoint Manager
(1) Right-click a client or group
(2) Go to "Modify Client Settings"
(3) Go to "Manage Baseline"
NOTE: These options in the Endpoint Manager are only "push" commands. They will not reflect the current settings on the connected client PCs
